August/September 2009 issue of Today's Catholic Teacher
Today's Catholic Teacher, The
Voice of Catholic Education, is the only magazine that reaches
principals and teachers in every Catholic school in the country,
plus all the diocesan superintendents and supervisors in the $10.4
billion Catholic school market.
St. Gabriel School was one of the
few recognized for using VLCs (Virtual Learning Communities) in the
classroom. A former Catholic school teacher and now a
professional consultant and author, Susan Brooks-Young, explained to
readers that the 8th grade students at St. Gabriel School used NING
VLC in their Language Arts class. The 8th graders used NING as
a platform for discussing novels they were reading in class.
St. Gabriel School has been recognized nationally for being so

Safe Environment Education!
Article 12 of the Charter for the Protection of Children and
Young People calls for all dioceses to establish “safe environment”
programs. Our Archdiocese is called upon to cooperate with
parents, civil authorities, educators and community organizations to
provide education and training for children, youth, parents,
ministers, educators, and others about ways to make and maintain a
safe environment for children.
Clicking on the logo for the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia, Office of Catholic Education will take you to all the
information presented to our school children. Going to this
page will allow you to access the Safe Environment Education
information and class lessons.

St. Gabriel Students develop mural
School's art club, consisting of 20 students from grades five
through eight, met every Tuesday in the Art Room under the
direction of Sr. Deborah.
November, St. Gabriel participated in the city's Mural
Arts Program. The "Sacred Spaces" mural, designed by Eric Okdeh,
was placed on two walls located on Dickinson Street
between Marston and Etting Streets.
Sr. Deborah and
students stand in front of the completed mural.
Connelly Foundation Access Program
Once again, we would like to thank
the Connelly Foundation for providing the opportunity for our
students in Grades 4 thru 8. Through the generosity of the
Foundation, 18 arts and cultural organizations receive funding to
present their outstanding programs to our students.
Admission and transportation costs
are included for all excursions. Each grade (4-8) enjoys two field
trips and two assemblies which come into school and all grades (PreK
to 8) enjoy and actively participate in the assemblies.
We are very fortunate to be part
of the CAP Program which is for three years after which it rotates
to another group of schools to enjoy and participate in.
May God continue to bless the
Connelly Foundation for their generous support of our students and
our Catholic schools.

Season of Advent
Advent is a time amid the hustle and bustle of getting ready for
Christmas. It is a time to prepare for the coming of the Christ Child on
Christmas Day. As a family, make an extra effort to attend church on
Sunday. Keep in your prayers those who are less fortunate than you.
Remember to pray for the men and women in the armed forces who are away
from their families at this time. I am sure, you as a family, can come
up with some ideas to bring you closer to God during this special
